Hayes School built and raced Hovercraft for three decades. The first was the Deb 1C which won the 1974 Ramsgate Hoverclub race. By the 1980s with Merlin - they had progressed from wood to fibre-glass. Merlin was a racing craft also known as Scarab 16 which had separate lift & thrust engines and twin thrust ducts. By the 1990s they had moved on to a single engined 'Hawk' Hovercraft.
